Manzara resmi beğenimizi, omuzlarda taşınan yıldızların konduğu otel pencerelerinden, Devlet lojmanlarının balkonlarından izlenen tarih anlayışımızı, tatil köylerinde bed and breakfast olmuş dünü ve bugünü dolaşmaya davet eder, elimizden tutarak.

Erkmen'in resimlerindeki tavır, gerçekliğin bu vesikalık foto kavranışının mübadili, kimlik kartı olmadan gezilebilen sıkıyönetim öncesi kafasındadır. İmgenin kişiye has zarafeti beklenebilir onun görselliğinden. Gerçek ile taklidinin aynı olmaması kafaları karıştırmasın, Erkmen, resimlerini parmak ucu ile yapıyor! İyi ki de öyle yapıyor. İyi ki ressamlık yapıyor, kendine has imgelerin diliyle işaret ediyor, farklı dokunuşlarla, gerçekliğin farklı okunuşlarının olabilirliğini gösteriyor. Kişi olma durumu konuşur, demek ki bunlar Erkmen'in imgeleridir; o nesnelerdeki mekanın ve zamanın düşüncesidir Erkmen'in parmak ucunun işaret ettiği.

Netice “Faili Maktul” resimlerdir... Çağdaş Halk Resmi desem abartmış mı olurum? Kim rezaleti sahiplenmek ister ki? Rezalet nasıl aktarılır onun maktulü olmadan? Ben böyle bir şey okuyorum, şöyle görüyorum “bir gecelik patlamada 50 senelik bıtkınlık” olduğunu düşünüyorum...

SCENES ALONG A ROUTE

Why, one wonders, has Erkmen Senan painted these paintings? To each his own reason for doing things, and I only have the outcome of his work from which to make out his intention. Erkmen is bellowing at the top of his voice after all, it is archaeology he is speaking of. He told me to visit the Archaeology Museum, even if it were just for one day, and I followed his advice: My imagination was provoked by ancient thought and classical beauty as I wandered the halls of the museum, transforming my perception of archaeology from merely a geographical excavation of history to a mnemonic excavation aimed towards an understanding of the present.

Bearing a headpiece erected for a philandering god ruling over dark clouds -could this column be his jealous wife’s grudge? An earthquake must have struck, the God of reason, angered by Dionysian rites perhaps, displaced him; wine in hand, grapes squashed by hand, young girls smuggled away to make love, a daemonic satyr, his skin flayed as punishment, they first fell, and then turned to “stone.” If they were not covered by sand, they are now either cornerstones in the mansion of a pasha, or a water basin of a village fountain. The knight rides on horseback, yet they became bastions to the castles of the knights of the sea, or the bell-tower of a church, and then stones for the steps of a mosque.

It must have been a statue, for instance, standing proudly, gaze fixed, with approval from the gods, on the eyes of the population of the city-state; falling over headfirst, nose already broken. Covered by sand brought along by the wind, grass growing on the land watered by rain, lying lifeless, his fate similar to the inhabitants of the Necropolis, their tombs unearthed for jewellery, stands now in god knows which stockbroker’s secret garden, his new owner sensing his power as he looks at his strong arms extending his now absent hand. Presented to his king by a travelling European nobleman, in return for recognition, with the mandate, the approval of the Sultan, or perhaps unbeknownst to him. Unearthed with pickaxes and shovels by labourers and local villagers in return for daily fees, hauled piece by piece by huge steamboats, crossing seas and oceans towards blue rooms.

I still come across symphonic rock playing on old audiocassettes on car stereos in yellow cabs. Our friend Erkmen Senan whistles at high-pitch: He is both the percussion and the strings, and even the Maestro, he is a walking orchestra, he talks on about rhythms, forms, colours that adjoin side by side, or one above the other, an orchestra of lighters plays Four Seasons by Vivaldi, like Erkin Koray’s “Yalnızlar Rıhtımı.” Thus Erkmen also orchestrates images in his painting. His images speak towards us; we search for a name, for an epithet in the images. Images come into being in the vessels of memory. The narrative is gradually weaved, images talk a lot, they begin to argue with one other, they talk in unison, then they each say different things.

Chocolate-coated sweets, coloured shoelaces, fluttering scarves, three-piece suits, social fires, massacres, rights withdrawn, rights not granted in the first place, table-top paper blocks, shelves and inventory notebooks... “The ignorant enjoy the company of their like / Yet only madmen will do to keep madmen company.” Callousness that thinks nothing of defecating in the agora. Bus depots blow in the wind where old hippodromes once stood. Erkmen Senan has clearly wandered through old cities buried under the waste of the new ones, and witnessed history extracted from new waste. He holds our hand and invites us to wander through our taste in landscape painting, our understanding of history that is viewed from hotel windowsills where stars taken off shoulders are laid down for the night, and from the balconies of state lodgings, and the past and present that has become the bed and breakfast of holiday villages. Instead of high-school geography maps and historical map books in step with the curriculum, or exotic tourist guidebooks he paints oil landscapes of his own routes

Each viewer may come up with his or her own interpretation of images. Erkmen Senan leaves this door open to the viewer. Everyone expects a different thing from images. Some expect sameness of truth and representation (imitation). As if it were a must that all see the same, power does not want a change in the scheme of tradition, or when it does want change, it demands control over it and a right to inspect. The ban on representations of the face are also a result of identicalization. The ban on images is also the belief in it, or the fear felt before it. Fear from truth is manifested in the demand of the powers that be to control the image. Modern technique has surrendered the scheme of tradition to technology. These days, both reality and illusion are dressed with the light and colour of digital reality and generalized. Photographic realism is accepted as the benchmark for reality, but long before Photoshop began to adorn reality, Hollywood photogenics imagined “desire” as a life style. Older women of the neighbourhood who cried after the fate of the female protagonist, received a moral lesson in the meantime. When morals are the issue, every bridge of empathy built with the hero does not seem so sympathetic. The easy-going, paternal workingman of film, the baddie of Turkish cinema, Erol Taş is stoned as he is coming off the bus in a city he is visiting for the premiere of a film he stars in. As long as progress is measured by economic values, what can technological innovation change in the system of values? State officials order a fast-food wrap, or act as escorts, for instance the hero of the TV series Valley of the Wolves is honoured with a national hero’s medal. The image and the real become the same. Shop signs are ordered to be huge –the size of the sign also indicating the size of the company- so that the other shop cannot be seen. Bullet marks cover the walls of churches in Cappadocia. The popularity of nationalism goes through the roof, highways pass over abandoned neighbourhoods, neighbourhood names are changed to “Salvation” to redeem them, and traces cannot be erased, despite incessant scraping. The old other is replaced by a series of new others. Gentrification tramples over them. Tradition is reinvented, time and again.

The attitude in Erkmen’s painting corresponds to this passport-photo-understanding of reality, his mood is that of pre-martial law times, when one could go out without having to carry identification papers. It is in his ability to point towards his route, without imposing it as if it were a new grid, and without following any of the academic or familiar grids of proven charm. The unique elegance of the image is expected from his visuality. Be not confused by reality and its imitation not being the same, Erkmen paints with the tips of his fingers! And it’s just as well he does. It’s just as well he paints, he indicates with the language of his unique images, he reveals the possibility of different touches and different readings of reality. Painting is the tips of one’s fingers, and painting speaks of what fingers point out. Erkmen’s images do not point to the obvious, they narrate their issue by personifying it, in other words, that stone is not a stone, nor is it an angel, those wings won’t make you fly, and you can’t embrace that sculpture. Images are the sentiments of people about them, in other words, images are the “time and conditions” of things they imitate. The state of being a person speaks out, thus these are Erkmen’s images; Erkmen’s fingertips point to the thought of space and time in those objects. I look at the “Men of Disease”, I see representations of the leaders on posters on the walls of buildings at company or party congresses held in sports halls, I see the posters for headman elections scraped off the walls, I see their torn eyes, I can’t make out their faces. I remember how Fikret Mualla was turned in, the gaze that renders reality and representation the same, emerges out of history as a form of power: The heroes of the nation become the heroes of the disease. Erkmen paints slogans whose representation and reality have been rendered the same, he makes an image of the representation of representation.

The aesthetic sense of a culture built using a neglected past, and manufactured nylon, vinyl floor covering and plastic lining... The murderer who pushes a bullet into the eyeholes of a figure in a fresco, or puts a bullet into the head of a saint, in actual fact, murders himself, he is the victim. Then, empathy is expressed not towards the murderer but the victim, however Erkmen does not emphasize the Classic Ideal, but the truth. The outcome are paintings of “Victim Perpetrators”... Would I be exaggerating if I called this Contemporary Folk Painting? Who would wilfully own up to a scandal, a disgrace? How can a scandal be communicated, without being a victim of it? This is what I read, how I see it, I think there is the “weariness of 50 years in the explosion of a single night”...
